WLM 9.0 BETA first hand experience

06 Mar

SOOOOO my backside itchy went and download WLM 9.0 to try, here are the list of changes for this version:

* Sign-in and messaging in multiple locations – You asked for it, now you have it! You can now sign into Messenger from more than one computer at a time, up to four at once. Simply sign into Messenger from one computer, install Messenger on another computer and sign in using the same account. (Only works if all computers are running Messenger 9.0 Beta. Currently enabled only for users whose Windows Live ID country is US or Canada.)

* Signature sounds Pick your own personal sound that your contacts will hear when you sign into Messenger (only works if you and your contacts have Messenger 9.0 Beta).

* Per contact sounds – Pick unique sounds for each of your contacts. You will be able to tell from across the room who is sending you a message.

* SPIM Reporting – If users send you unsolicited messages or invitations that you consider spam, you can block them and report them as spammers. If you report a user as a spammer, the messenger service will collect this data and put appropriate restrictions on the spammer accounts. All reports of spammers are kept confidential.

* Animated Display Pictures Show your moves! Messenger now supports animated .gif files as display pictures.

* Link in Personal Status Message URLs in Personal Status Messages are hot and clickable in the Messenger contact list.

* Behind the Scenes Changes Architectural changes that modified how things work but shouldnt have changed how things look

* Changes to sign-in, connectivity, presence, sending text IMs, voice & video features

* Windows Live Contacts Server wlcomm.exe runs in the background to keep your contacts information up-to-date and helps Messenger sign you in faster

So time for some personal opinions,

There isn’t really much change in terms of visuals and design; still the same ol’ msn we all use to know. Most of the changes listed above as you can see, deals more with the functions and what’s inside the whole damn thing. Some of the new features that are worth mentioning are:

Sign in at more than one place. since i don’t have another computer at another place, i can’t try it out. Although i find it abittttttt dangerous if somehow some dude using WLM 9.0 too managed to get hold of your username and pw. but well. at least still have the rename thingy. but still.. well. just keep your pw and username safe i guess.

Ahhhh the ever so irritating msn sound. DUANG DUANG DUANG DUANG DUANGGGGGGGG! *bashes computer to bits.*

anyways, now you can change it to make it even more irritating!!!! aliens! band introduction! Cafe in paris! (HUH?) etc etc. its not limited to sign in sound only. as long as its emitting from msn, you can change it. from nudge to receiving a new email, everything is customizing to suit your listening pleasure.

One more ‘neat’ feature is the fact that you can even customize YOUR OWN msn sign in sound so that when you sign in, your poor friends are subjected to a ‘different and more unique experience’. and whats worse! look at the pic below:

yes! YOU CAN CHOOSE ANYYYYYYYYY MUSIC FILE FORMAT TO ACT AS YOUR SOUND!!!! they even have a kwel sound editor for you to slide it around and cutting only the part you want. (max. 5 seconds)

no shit. now don be surprise if your friend sign in and theres this weird fapping noise. and pray your parents are not around when that happens.

but thankfully there is a feature to mute all contact’s sound. but if i interpret it correctly, it means ALL? so what if i only hate this person’s sign in sound?? kinda stupid really.

Another feature, which have already been mentioned but what the heck, is the ability to use GIF peek! COOL! moving peeeeekkkturresss! msn supplies some default ones. I can see them move!!!! but sadly, none of my friends have WLM 9.0 and the closest tech geek friend i have, JJ doesn’t like to meddle around with beta things, or so he say. I just think he’s just lazy.

Another is the clicking on links directly on msn will bring you to the page on your browser! no more asking your friends or lame copying and pasting! rock on! (again mentioned before what aiya i just want to emphasize.)

last but not least signing in seems abit tad faster, even though at the main page they say ‘signing in may take a little longer than usual’ (or something like that.) weird.

Well thats all folks, My personal recommendation is if you want to have the NEWEST AND LATEST AND MOST SHINIEST(ok maybe not THAT SHINY. since its beta) then go ahead and grab this. but if ya those that don really care, then just stick with your old one. I see no big difference really.

NOTE: if you intent to change to WLM 9.0 make sure you back up any nice nice beautiful nick that you have created. since they deleted mine. -.- (hmm not sure is the fault of wlm or my msgplus though.)

DOUBLE NOTE: this is BETA. READ: B-E-T-A , so if it doesn’t work. don kpkb. just uninstall and change back to WLM 8.5 or whatever version u deem good enough.

Thanks for testing it out for us dude.

I think I’ll stick to version 8.5 for the moment until Microsoft manages to iron out any bugs that version 9.0 might have. Like you mentioned, it’s a beta version, so I’m sure that there are quite a number of hidden bugs in there just waiting to be discovered and rectified.

And the DUANG DUANG sound that you mentioned. Man. That would irritate the hell out of me.

Well as of now everything seems to be working fine(touch wood), but yeah, it IS microsoft we’re talking about.

I’ll probably stick with this as long as nothing kooks up. lazy to change back. hoho
